IF HUMANITY WERE TO BE REPRESENTED BY A WALL, WOULD IT BE CRUMBLING AND DECAYING WITH EACH HUMAN ACT OF ATROCITY. THE WITCH HUNTS IN SALEM IN 1692 ARE BUT ONE EXAMPLE OF OUR WEAKNESS IN BEING CAUGHT UP IN THE HYSTERIA OF PREJUDICE.

BACKGROUND NOTES TO THE THEME OF THE GATHERING

AMERICA - 1692

The Salem Witch Hunt of 1692 is perhaps the most famous of its kind, at least in the English-speaking world. The panic arose in Salem Village, Massachusetts, when a group of eight girls, aged 11 -20 who, in the winter of 1691-2, used to meet in the back premises of the minister's house in the company of his slave, Tituba. These sessions ended by driving Abigail Williams and Ann Putnam into what was an evidently hysterical illness.

Their hysterical naming of men and women in the district as witches, led to a series of arrests and hangings, many motivated by the greed to purchase the land of the accused. Commonsense prevailed over some, but those who expressed their doubts over the girls' testimony and the judgement of the Court were likely to draw accusations down on themselves. Finally, on the return of Govemor Phips the Special Court was cancelled and the judges and magistrates made a public admission of error.

AMERICA - 1950-54

Arthur Miller - one of the great play-writes of the 20th century - experienced another witch-hunt. Between 1950-54 Senator Joe McCarthy presided over the investigations of the Senate Committee on Internal Security. America was in the grip of Cold War hysteria and the Committee was as ruthlessly determined to hunt out -Communists" as the Salem judges had been to hunt out 'witches' . Like the Salem judges McCarthy tried to extort first confessions, then names of alleged associates. Rcfusal to denounce others could be punished as contempt of the Committee. Few of his victims had the courage shown by John Proctor in the play.

Miller himself was called before the investigating committee. After admitting that he had attended meetings of communist writers nine years before (in order to find out where they stood) he was asked for the names of other people present. He replied, "I am trying to and will protect my sense of myself. I could not use the name of another person and bring trouble upon him. ,

While charges for Miller resulted in a fee and a suspended sentence, many other directors, writers and performers were not so lucky. Incriminated by simply being named, they were placed on the infamous 'black-list'. Many did not have a chance to work again until the last sixties, if at all.

AUSTRALIA

The "Crucible" has special relevance to Australia: hysteria, bigotry and ignorance lie behind our infamous miscarriage of justice in the Azaria Chamberlaine case.

10 ladders plus 1 frame covered with shadecloth

lay out the ladders in the right order on the floor
stand up the ladders and attach the 'diving boards'
bring in the wall frame to the front edge of the ladders
cast sit on the 'diving boards' having been attached to the ladder with a harness
the cast lift their legs out to go through the slit in the shadecloth as the wall is straightened to rest on the ladders
the appearance from the front -the wall looks vertical but is at an angle
