In 2000, we decided to retell an old story, a classic poem by Samuel Taylor Colleridge, THE RIME OF THE ANCIENT MARINER. To achieve this we needed to create the illusion of an old sailing ship on stage, one that through the telling of the story, would appear to change from new to old. Congratulations must go to Gerry Stevens and the SACE 1 Theatre Technology class for their design and construction, and to Vanda Banks, her art students and the cast and crew for their art work to create ‘ a painted ship upon a painted ocean.’ The cast were able to create an eerie and supernatural ambience, through some excellent characterizations inspired by Ian McClouds direction. Death was created in the form of carcass like images hanging upside down within the ship, and then slowly transforming and taking over the ship. Thank you to Fred Semmens for his excellent construction work for us to hang from, and to Royce Messenger for the gravity boots. Spectre, and Death, her mate, played by Amanda Passingham and Jessie McKinlay, using their own choreography, created a strong image of cursing the ship and conjuring up the sea serpents from beneath a floor cloth. This writhing mass was the result of some inspired choreography by Adrienne Semmens, who also portrayed the spirit of the ship as the prow, suspended in a harness two metres off the floor in a very uncomfortable position for the whole eight minutes. Reacting to this was the ships crew, using an Irish Dance movement theme with lots of help from Siobhan Phillips. Central to the story were the three main protagonists, superbly portrayed and danced by Debbie Maxted as the albatross, Peter Anderson as the wedding guest to whom the story is told, and Ian Day as the aging ancient mariner. However the illusion needs to be maintained through a complete look. For this we must thank a group of mums, led by Colleen Hatwell, Anne Lowe and Mary Partis for their unbelievable contribution in time, effort and expertise for the costuming. Every character was true to the style, period and ambience of the piece. When you add the incredible hairstyles and makeup designs by Robyn Callan and Colleen Hatwell, with help from a group of enthusiastic ex students (Eistedders), we had a complete package. But to achieve success we need to be able to set the scene, and strike it afterwards within a four minute limit. This group of twenty students, led by Mat Maxwell and Angela Potter, achieved the impossible on the final night, by setting in just over three minutes. This group were justly rewarded by taking out the BACKSTAGE AWARD for 2000. The music was written by Nigel Westlake and was a compilation from the soundtrack of ANTARCTICA. CAST AND CREW |
